Start the tour in Kigali with a magnificent city excursion, then to Chimpanzee tracking in Nyungwe Forest – a famous destination for chimp trekking and canopy walk not only in Rwanda but also the entire East African region.
The safari proceeds to D.R. Congo – Virunga region, a very less travelled place that rewards every traveler with lush flora and magnificent scenery dotted with Virunga national park, Nyiragongo mountain, etc.
Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Kigali city tour and drive southwards to Nyungwe forest.
Pick up by a company guide after your breakfast and have a road transfer through Kigali for a city tour. Have a visit to the presidential palace and the genocide memorial museum. The presidential palace was the residence of the former Rwandese president, Juvenal Habyarimana.
His death sparked off the 1994 genocide due to tribalism that led to the death of more than 800,000 people in the country. Also visit the genocide museum that holds the rich history of the massive genocide of Rwanda in 1994.
After you will have lunch and transfer to Nyungwe national park. Have an optional visit to the kibati community village and get to know more of the Rwandese culture. You will have supper and an overnight at the checked in lodge.
Day 2: Nyungwe forest – Chimpanzee tracking
Wake up early for a primate experience in the park, hike to the park’s headquarters for a short briefing. You will track into the jungle and experience the livelihoods of the chimpanzee as they feed, swing on the forest’s branches, groom and rest in their nests. After retire and relax at the lodge as you wait for dinner and overnight.
Day 3: Transfer to Mount Nyiragongo
After your breakfast, you will have a transfer to Mount Nyiragongo located in the democratic republic of Congo.
This is active volcano with the world’s largest lava lake in the world. This mountain is also part of the chain mountains that make up 8 of the Virunga mountains. The mountain is also located in the larger Virunga conservation area, where you will have dinner and a sleepover at the checked in lodge.
Day 4: Ascend to the summit
Have early morning breakfast and hike to the park headquarters for a briefing. Hiking of mount Nyiragongo begins at the Kinigi trail as you ascend to the summit of this active volcano.
The reward of this hike is a breathtaking view of the world’s largest lave lake. You will be escorted by porters who will prepare dinner at the cabins where you will spend the night.
Day 5: Descend
You will have breakfast at the cabins, and prepare for a trek back to the bottom of the volcano. After you will have a road transfer to Kigali international airport for departure to your next destination.
