Book early for a good stay in one of the lodges in the Buhoma sector, home to five habituated gorilla groups. These include the Mubare group, the first to open for trekking in 1993, followed by the Rushegura group, Habinyanja group, Katwe family, and Muyambi family.
Buhoma was the first area in Bwindi opened for trekking by the Uganda Wildlife Authority. It also offers popular trailheads such as the Muyanja River Trail in Buhoma Valley, a shorter walk suited to birdwatching.
Another trail is the Waterfall Trail, where you pass through tree ferns to reach waterfalls and may also meet the Batwa people to learn about their culture and history.
A drive to Buhoma takes about eight to ten hours, passing through Ntungamo, Rukungiri, and Butogota, before reaching the sector. Buhoma has several affordable lodges that provide comfort for visitors.
This camp offers ensuite safari tents, three ensuite cottages, two non-self-contained bandas built in African style, a six-bed dormitory, and a campsite for campers.
Facilities include a backup generator, craft shop, laundry services, massage services, a restaurant, and a bar.
This lodge has bandas named Sparrow, Robin, and Eagle, each with four beds. It also has two smaller bandas, Kiwi and Warbler, each with two beds, plus a campsite.
Facilities include a bar, restaurant, grocery, laundry services, gumboots and rain gear for wet weather, binoculars for spotting wildlife, and lunch boxes for hikers.
Established in 1994, this lodge offers views of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and the Virunga ranges. It has twenty fully equipped tents named after African birds.
Each tent includes a bathtub, toilet, bathroom with hot and cold showers, clean bedding, bottled water, and comfortable beds.
Other budget accommodations in Buhoma include CTPH Gorilla Conservation Camp, Bwindi Guest House, Buhoma Gorilla Camp, and Bwindi Forest Lodge. All can be reached by both road and air transport.
