Rwanda also carries deep history. The country experienced tragic bloodshed during the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi, rooted in long-standing conflict between the Hutu and Tutsi communities.
Tensions grew from colonial times, when Belgian rulers favored the Tutsi minority, creating divisions with the Hutu majority. In 1959, the Hutu took power, and between 1959 and 1962 many Tutsi were killed or forced to flee to neighboring countries.
The situation reached its worst in 1994 after the Rwandan president’s plane was shot down, leading to a genocide in which over 800,000 people lost their lives.
The memories of that time remain painful for survivors, and the history is shared carefully in memorials and museums across the country, as a way of teaching and remembering.
Today, Rwanda is peaceful, united, and one of the cleanest and safest countries in Africa. Visitors are welcomed warmly, and places like Saish Stay Rwanda offer comfort, security, and hospitality, giving you a good base for your Rwanda gorilla trekking trip.
