Day 1: Arrival in Kigali and Drive to Bwindi, Uganda
Our company representative will pick you up from your lodge, residence, or Kigali International Airport for a drive to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, home to the largest population of mountain gorillas in the world. The park sits in southern Uganda and can be reached in about 3 to 4 hours from Kigali through the Katuna border post.
Before the drive, enjoy a short city tour of Kigali, taking in local markets and the Kigali Genocide Memorial, where documentaries and exhibits mark the more than 800,000 people, mostly Tutsi, who lost their lives during the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi.
The drive to Bwindi passes green plantations, rolling hills, and views of the Virunga Mountains in the distance.
Day 2: Gorilla Trekking and Departure
Start the day with a full breakfast early in the morning, followed by a scenic drive to the park headquarters for a briefing that lasts about 30 to 40 minutes. The briefing covers the rules of gorilla trekking, document and permit verification, and assigns each visitor to a gorilla family.
Mountain gorillas live only in East Africa around the Virunga Mountains, and Bwindi holds the largest number of them, with gorilla groups here noted for slight differences from those found elsewhere. Gorilla trekking takes between 1 and 8 hours of hiking, plus one hour spent with the gorilla family once found, in one of the park’s forest sectors.
Watching the gorillas up close is a rewarding experience. The presence of the silverback, the mothers caring for their young, and the play of the younger gorillas make for a memorable hour in the forest.
After gorilla trekking, return to the lodge for lunch before driving back to Kigali for a night flight or a stay at your hotel.
What to Bring
Pack hiking boots, a rain jacket, long trousers, a long-sleeved shirt, gardening gloves, insect repellent, sunscreen, drinking water, and energy snacks for the trek. A camera and binoculars help you capture the gorillas and other wildlife along the way.
