Day 1: Pickup and Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Your driver-guide will meet you at your hotel or lodge at the agreed time. They will brief you on the trip ahead, explain the rules to follow in the country, cover what to expect from gorilla trekking, and answer any questions you may have.
After the briefing, begin your 8 to 9 hour journey. The first stop is Kampala city for a short city tour and lunch, before continuing west toward the gorilla trekking region. Along the way, you will pass rolling hills, forests, and green plantations.
Arrive at your lodge in the gorilla trekking area in the evening, where you can enjoy a meal and rest before the next day’s trek.
Day 2: Gorilla Trekking and Batwa Pygmies Encounter
After breakfast, head to the sector headquarters for an early briefing led by park rangers, who cover life in the forest and the gorillas themselves, verify your trekking documents, and assign you to a gorilla family.
Finding the gorillas takes about 1 to 6 hours of hiking through forest, slopes, and valleys, with chances to spot other forest residents such as monkeys, birds, and reptiles along the way. Once you find your assigned family, you get one hour to watch the silverback, mothers with their young, and juveniles at play.
After the trek, head back for lunch, followed by a 1 to 2 hour visit to the Batwa pygmies. The Batwa were hunters and gatherers in the forests of Bwindi and Mgahinga, and today they share their cultural heritage and beliefs with visitors. Depending on time, you may also visit local caves and enjoy traditional dances and songs, with the option to support the community directly.
Day 3: Departure
Enjoy breakfast at your lodge, then begin the 8 to 9 hour drive to Entebbe International Airport or your hotel, with a stop at the equator for photos, lunch, and a look at the equator line demonstration.
What to Bring
Pack hiking boots, a rain jacket, long trousers, a long-sleeved shirt, gardening gloves, insect repellent, sunscreen, drinking water, and energy snacks for the trek. A camera and binoculars help you capture the gorillas and other wildlife along the way.
