Detailed 6-Day Uganda Safari Itinerary
Day 1: Pickup and City Tour
Meet your experienced driver-guide for a warm welcome and a briefing on the trip ahead, before heading out to see local markets, the Independence Monument, and the Uganda National Museum.
Enjoy lunch in the city and take care of any last-minute shopping, then head to your hotel to rest before the trip begins in earnest.
Day 2: Depart Kampala for Kibale Forest National Park
After breakfast, set off for Kibale Forest National Park, home to one of the largest concentrations of primates in the world, with 13 species calling the forest home, chimpanzees included.
The drive to Kibale takes about 6 to 7 hours, passing through varied scenery and lush vegetation along the way. Stop for lunch en route, then arrive at the lodge in the late afternoon for rest, dinner, and sleep.
Day 3: Primate Trekking and Bigodi Swamp Exploration
After breakfast, drive to the park headquarters for registration and a pre-trek briefing before heading into the forest to find chimpanzees, which share close to 98% of their DNA with humans.
The trek runs through hills, thick bush, and the sounds of the forest for about 1 to 6 hours, with chances to spot other primates such as colobus monkeys and grey-cheeked mangabeys along the way.
Once you find the chimpanzees, you get one hour to watch them play, rest, and move through the treetops, with time for photos and questions.
Return to the lodge for lunch, then visit Bigodi Swamp, a Ramsar wetland site known for its birdlife, plant life, and local community life. Enjoy a sunset drive back to the lodge for dinner and rest.
Day 4: Top of the World Crater Walk and Transfer to Queen Elizabeth National Park
Start the day with coffee, followed by a 2 to 3 hour “Top of the World” hike, taking in views of craters, lakes, and green hills across the landscape.
Afterward, depart for Queen Elizabeth National Park, one of Uganda’s most visited parks. Stop for lunch en route, then have dinner and rest at your lodge in or near the park.
Day 5: Morning Game Drive and Afternoon Boat Trip
After breakfast, set out on a 3 to 4 hour game drive, looking for lions, leopards, elephants, buffaloes, warthogs, hippos, giraffes, crested cranes, Rwenzori turacos, monkeys, and kob among others, before a picnic lunch.
In the afternoon, take a boat cruise on the Kazinga Channel, home to a large concentration of hippos, crocodiles, birds, and other wildlife gathering along the shoreline. Return to the lodge for a sunset drive, dinner, and rest.
Day 6: Morning Game Drive and Departure
Wake for one more game drive, about 3 to 4 hours, to look for anything you may have missed the day before, including lions, leopards, and hyenas.
Enjoy a bush breakfast, then return to the lodge for your luggage before heading to Kampala or the airport, with a stop at the equator for photos, lunch, and the equator line demonstration.
What to Bring
Pack hiking boots, a rain jacket, long trousers, a long-sleeved shirt, gardening gloves, insect repellent, sunscreen, drinking water, and energy snacks for the trek. A camera and binoculars help you capture wildlife along the way.
