Visitors accessing Bwindi Impenetrable National Park from the Rushaga and Nkuringo gates can stay at Gorilla Closeup Lodge. The lodge sits on 40 acres of land bordering the forest where endangered mountain gorillas live.

Gorillas feed mainly on leaves, seeds, roots, stems, flowers, insects, and fruits. During the dry season, they move around more in search of food, which can make them harder to find, while in the rainy season they are easier to spot since food is more plentiful. To raise your chances of seeing them, book with an experienced guide who understands gorilla behavior. Our gorilla trekking difficulty guide covers how season affects your trek.

The best time to stay at Gorilla Closeup Lodge is during the dry season, when paths are easier to use and nearby areas stay accessible. That said, the lodge also welcomes visitors during the rainy season, with indoor activities and the chance to trek gorillas during short rains.

Activities include gorilla trekking, nature walks, and birding. To be well prepared, carry insect repellent, a rain jacket, waterproof boots, a first aid kit, water, and snacks for extra energy while trekking. Our gorilla trekking packing list covers this in full.

The lodge was founded by a Ugandan named Seith Byarugaba, whose grandfather was born in Bwindi forest. It was built using local materials to protect the natural environment, with support from the surrounding community.

Today, Gorilla Closeup Lodge is well developed, offering six types of cottages, including the Dian Fossey Cottages, George Cottage, and Royal Crafted Cottage. The lodge also has a spacious restaurant serving three-course meals, free Wi-Fi, and reliable customer service. It can host over seventy guests at affordable prices.

Book your stay at Gorilla Closeup Lodge and pair it with one of our Uganda gorilla safari packages to plan your full trip, or check our gorilla trekking permit cost guide to budget for your Bwindi trek.
